Water is a precious resource in the semi-arid desert Samburu region. One of the goals of the Samburu Conservation Research Initiative is to study water resources in this region for the benefit of human and wildlife community sustainability. Water samples from dams, laggas, streams, boreholes and rivers were analysed for physico-chemical parameters and microbial composition. By identifying when and where water resources have become critical, intervention measures including provision of alternative water sources (boreholes, piped water from permanent springs such as Buffalo Springs) could be explored as viable alternatives.
